Good Times is the debut album of the up and coming solo artist Roger Berkeley. Released on 10 December 2012, it features nine songs written, recorded, produced and performed by himself - a true one man band!
In Your Arms starts the album. It is a recognisable Christian Rock song written in June 2012.
Free Fallin’ is the oldest song of the collection. This song is full of burning passion and desire and a great one to get you pumped! Written originally during the summer of 2011, this arrangement was recorded in July 2012. Its riff has been compared to Pink Floyd!
After the first two upbeat anthems, Owe It To Me is a complete contrast. It takes an introspective look at the artist during a troubled period in late December 2011. Needless to say, Roger’s 2012 proceeded to improve!
Back Again was written the two weeks later, in January 2012, and carries the same haunting backdrop, though it provides a more hopeful outlook, of something great to come.
The Final Encounter was written in two sessions. The two-chord progression was discovered in October 2011, and the first verse and chorus was written then. The second verse took its time coming, and was realised in February of the following year.
If You Were Mine came by chance in an idle improvisation when Roger was supposed to be recording another song for the album. When another song, Over For Me was dropped from the track list, this one slotted in perfectly, and so begins the love theme of the second half of the album.
Based on real life emotions, With You is a personalised love song, though that person will remain nameless!
Good Times (I’m Still Dreaming) is the reason for the secrecy, and it displays the raw emotions of a break-up ballad. Originally inspired by the passion of Whitney Houston’s version of Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You’, the song takes on a slightly different style.
Nevermind is the perfect end to a well-constructed album. The simple lyrics narrate a post-break up anthem, with plenty of hook-filled choruses and a screaming guitar solo.
